1	Title:	Carmela Cafarelli Photographs

	Abstract:	Carmela Cafarelli (ca. 1880-1979) was an Italian-American opera star, founder of an opera company, and accomplished harpist from Cleveland, Ohio. Her father, Rocco Cafarelli, was a renowned Italian harpist who had immigrated to Cleveland in the 1880s, and was his daughter's earliest teacher. At the age of eight, she began study with master harpist Henry B. Fabiani in Cleveland. As a harpist, she toured the United States and abroad. She also became a solo harpist for the Cleveland Orchestra. Cafarelli studied voice with William Saal in Cleveland, and later attended the Conservatorie Santa Lucia and the Reale Accademia Filarmonica Romana in Italy, earning diplomas in both voice and harp. After her return to the United States in 1924, she undertook additional musical studies with Benjamino Gigli and Pietro Audisio of the New York Metropolitan Opera. In 1929, she returned to Cleveland, and in 1934, founded the Cafarelli Opera Company. This group toured throughout the United States and put on many charitable performances in Northeast Ohio. Cafarelli stopped performing in 1945, but continued to head her opera company and became a leading philanthropist and promoter of the arts in Cleveland. The collection consists of individual portraits of Carmela Cafarelli, including publicity and performance photographs, family photographs including portraits of her father, Rocco Cafarelli, and portraits of Cafarelli family friends and associates.

	Abstract:	The Friendly Inn Social Settlement is a Cleveland, Ohio, social settlement founded in 1874 by members of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. It offered a full range of services and social activities, including an outreach program for delinquent boys. Located in various city neighborhoods, including Broadway and Central, Woodland, and Carver Park Estates, its service area became the center of Cleveland's African American community. The collection consists of photographs of activities, games, and sports at the Friendly Inn Social Settlement, and also of the neighborhood it served. Included are many views of African American and Italian organizations at the Settlement and views of housing conditions of the surrounding area.

3	Title:	Greater Cleveland Ethnographic Museum Photographs

	Abstract:	The Greater Cleveland Ethnographic Museum was founded in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1975 to prepare exhibits for the American Revolution Bicentennial celebration in Cleveland. The exhibits were to depict contributions from Cleveland's ethnic groups to the multicultural society of the area. Following the 1976 Bicentennial celebration, the museum established a permanent office and exhibit gallery in the Old Arcade in downtown Cleveland. Although the museum closed in 1981, it was able to document the experiences of immigrants through oral histories, photographs, and other collected material. The collection consists of approximately 1,500 photographs and 1,500 slides.

	Abstract:	Anna Sotak (ca. 1893-1976) was an officer of State Savings and Loan in Cleveland, Ohio. She was also active in local Slovak fraternal organizations. The collection consists of individual portraits and group portraits of Anna M. Sotak, her family and friends, and views of the State Savings and Loan Company office in South Euclid, Ohio. Also included are views of the Ladies Pennsylvania Slovak Catholic Union convention, 1960 and 1968, and views of various trips taken by Sotak.

5	Title:	Hiram House Social Settlement Photographs

	Abstract:	Hiram House Social Settlement is a pioneer Cleveland, Ohio, social settlement founded in 1896 by a group of Hiram College students led by George Bellamy, who later became Commissioner of Recreation for the city of Cleveland. During the height of its growth the settlement offered a full range of social, educational and recreational activities, but since 1948 it has concentrated its resources on Hiram House Camp in the suburb of Chagrin Falls. Before 1948 its primary service area was centered in a neighborhood populated primarily by Jews, Italians and African Americans. The collection consists of approximately 4,000 black and white photographs and prints taken mainly by George A. Bellamy and his assistants. The collection includes scenes of the settlement house in Cleveland, Ohio, neighborhoods, activities both at the settlement house and at Hiram House Camp, and portraits of many of the staff members, supporters, and participants. The collection contains both mounted and unmounted photographs, as well as layout boards and paper negatives used in the preparation of various publications for Hiram House Camp.

	Abstract:	Bertha Blue (ca. 1877-1963) was a member of a well known African American family in Cleveland, Ohio. She was a teacher at the Murray Hill Elementary School located in Little Italy, an Italian immigrant neighborhood on Cleveland's East side, from 1903 to 1947. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of Bertha Blue, her daughter Jane Darr, Welcome T. Blue, Sr., and other family members and friends. Included in the collection are photographs of Jane Edna Hunter, Virginia Bray, and G. Howard Fields. Events depicted are the weddings of Mabelle Blue and Jane Lee Darr, the tennis group with whom Bertha Blue played, and Bertha Blue's first grade class.

7	Title:	Cleveland Cultural Garden Federation Photographs

	Abstract:	The Cleveland Cultural Garden Federation was founded in 1925 by Leo Weidenthal as the Civic Progress League. In 1926 the name was changed to the Cleveland Cultural Garden League, and in 1952 to the Cleveland Cultural Garden Federation. Weidenthal conceived the idea of a series of gardens, each having a central theme concerning the history of a single nationality group in Cleveland, Ohio. The City of Cleveland and the Work Projects Administration did much of the work on the earlier gardens after a 1927 ordinance set aside areas of Rockefeller Park next to the Shakespeare Garden for the development of similar gardens with ethnic themes. The collection consists of photographs and drawings relating to Cleveland, Ohio's Cultural Gardens, including dedications of the Gardens, sculpture within them, and individuals associated with the Gardens. Also included are views of various "One World Day" celebrations.

8	Title:	Laszlo and Susan Krausz Photographs

	Abstract:	Laszlo Krausz (1903-1979) and Susan Krausz (1914-2008) were a Jewish couple from Cleveland Heights, Ohio, who were accomplished musicians. Laszlo Krausz was born in Pecs, Hungary in 1903. From an early age he studied violin, travelling to Budapest, Vienna, and Paris to continue his education, until settling in Switzerland in 1929 to study viola. Susan Strauss Krausz was born in Stuttgart, Germany in 1914. She completed piano studies at the Musikhochschule of Stuttgart and then moved to Switzerland in 1933. Following their 1935 marriage, Laszlo and Susan performed a series of viola-piano sonatas for Radio Geneva before immigrating to the United States in 1947. The Krausz family initially settled in New York where Laszlo accepted a position at the New York College of Music and played with the Carnegie Hall Pops Orchestra. Laszlo was then offered a position with the Cleveland Orchestra under George Szell and moved to Cleveland, Ohio, in the fall of 1947. While a member of the Cleveland Orchestra, Laszlo also founded the Cleveland Chamber Orchestra and conducted both the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra and the Akron Symphony Orchestra. He also pursued the sketching and painting that would become his full-time passion following his retirement from the orchestra in 1969. Laszlo's art was shown at various galleries, including the Butler Museum of Art. Susan Krausz joined the faculty of the Cleveland Music School Settlement upon her arrival in the city, and was awarded her M.A. in music from Western Reserve University in 1956. She continued to perform and compose while also teaching piano at Case Western Reserve University and in her home. The Krauszs had two sons, Peter, who owned a public relations firm in Israel until his death in 1989, and Michael, who is currently a philosophy professor at Bryn Mawr College. The collection consists of 339 black and white photographs, 419 color photographs, and 2538 color 35mm slides.

	Abstract:	William Mathewson Milliken (1889-1978) was the director of the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio, from 1930-1958. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of William M. Milliken, and the Milliken, Mathewson and related families of Cleveland, Ohio; Stamford, Connecticut; and Scotland and Northern Ireland. Also included are views of art objects from Milliken's personal collection and of the opening of an addition to the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1958. Photographs that were to be used in the unpublished "Greece : Many-Blossomed Spring" are also included. An album containing views of William M. Milliken's activities at the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey is part of the collection.

	Abstract:	The Cleveland Picture File I is a collection of black and white and color photographs that depict scenes in Cleveland, Ohio, in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The photographs include views of amusement parks, banquets, bridges, buildings, businesses, celebrations, cemeteries, churches and synagogues, clubs, colleges and universities, conventions, convents and seminaries, court proceedings, disasters, fairs and exhibitions, fire departments, the Flats, hospitals, hotels and inns, housing developments, immigrants and naturalization, industry, labor unions, lakefront and the harbor, libraries, life cycle events, lighthouses, markethouses and malls, the military and military units, monuments, museums, music and musicians, parades, parks, the police department, political campaigns and elections, Public Square, radio and television, recreation, residences, riots/demonstrations/strikes, rivers/streams/brooks, schools (both public and private), social service agencies/charities, sports, streets, taverns, theaters, toll houses, transportation, general views, and zoos and aquariums. 	Abstract:	The Alliance of Poles of America is a fraternal insurance organization which broke away from the Polish National Alliance in 1895, over the issue of membership for non-Roman Catholic Poles. Originally a Cleveland, Ohio, organization, it now includes groups throughout Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania, and has opened its membership to men and women with other than Polish or Catholic backgrounds. In 1917 it changed its name from the Alliance of Poles in Ohio to the Alliance of Poles of America. The collection consists of portraits and views of businesses, clubs, athletes, musicians, and events associated with or relating to the Alliance of Poles of America, a fraternal-insurance organization established in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1895. Included are views of the Alliance of Poles of America General Office at Broadway and Forman Avenue and portraits of members of its Central Governing Board during the 1930s and 1940s. Also included are World War II military portraits of members of Cleveland's Polish American community.

	Abstract:	Benedict Crowell (1869-1952) was a Cleveland, Ohio, engineer, builder and bank president who became Assistant Secretary of War and Director of Munitions during World War I. The collection consists of photographs depicting the life and career of General Benedict Crowell, including his service during World War I, and portraits of Woodrow Wilson and Herbert Hoover, dedication of various European monuments after the war, scenes in Paris, views of France, Holland, Belgium, Italy, and Germany, and photographs and a pamphlet from the Naval Rigid Airship Station in Lakehurst, New Jersey.

	Abstract:	Frederick C. Crawford (1891-1994) was a Cleveland, Ohio, industrialist and philanthropist. Crawford headed Thompson Products, Inc. (later TRW Inc.) as it moved from an automotive and aircraft parts manufacturer into the aviation and aerospace industries. A leader of Cleveland's philanthropic community, Crawford served on the boards of many cultural institutions. He was appointed to the Western Reserve Historical Society Board of Trustees in 1944 and later served as it's president. He was instrumental in the transfer of the Thompson Auto Album and Aviation Museum collection to WRHS in the 1960s, which became the nucleus of the Frederick C. Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum of WRHS. Crawford was married twice; to Audrey Cecelia Bowles in 1932, and to Kathleen M. Saxon in 1975. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of Frederick C. Crawford and various Crawford family members. Views of various Crawford family homes are included, as are images from travels taken by Crawford. Portraits and views of Steel Products Co. and Thompson Products Inc. facilities and employees, including Thompson Products president Charles E. Thompson and Thompson family members, are also part of the collection. Pioneers in the aviation and aerospace industries are represented in the collection and include James E. Doolittle, T. Keith Glennan, aviatrix Jacqueline Cochran, and three time Thompson Trophy Race winner Roscoe Turner. Others depicted include Douglas MacArthur, Dwight D. Eisenhower, General Claire Chennault, and William M. McVey. Groups Crawford was associated with, including the Western Reserve Historical Society, Harvard University, and various national aeronautic associations and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), are also part of the collection, as are portraits and views depicting the National Air Races.

	Abstract:	Myron T. Herrick (1854-1929) was a humanitarian, financier, industrialist, Governor of Ohio, and United States Ambassador to France. Herrick served as president and chairman of the board of the Society for Savings, Cleveland, Ohio. He also had numerous other local and national business interests. Herrick was involved in Ohio and national Republican party politics, maintaining close ties with Marcus A. Hanna, William McKinley, and other party notables. He won election as Ohio governor in 1903, serving one term. He was appointed United States Ambassador to France in 1912, serving until November 1914. Herrick played a key role in wartime France, both in his participation in diplomatic relations between combatants and in various humanitarian aid pursuits. Herrick was reappointed Ambassador to France by President Harding in 1921, serving until his death in 1929. the collection consists of 138 black and white photographs relating to Myron T. Herrick's ambassadorship in Paris, France.

	Abstract:	The Wade family was a prominent nineteenth and early twentieth century Cleveland, Ohio, family with business interests in the telegraph and railroad industries, mining, manufacturing, and banking. Jeptha Homer Wade spent his early life as an apprentice to a tanner and as a carpenter. He next turned his interest to the emerging telegraph industry. In 1849, he organized the Cleveland and Cincinnati Telegraph Company. In 1857, Wade moved to Cleveland as the Western Union Telegraph Company's first general agent. His business interests were extensive in Cleveland, including the Cleveland Rolling Mill Company and the Citizens Savings and Loan Association. Randall Palmer Wade worked with his father in the telegraph business, moving with him to Cleveland in 1857. His business interests included the Cuyahoga Mining Company; the Citizens Savings and Loan Association; the Cleveland Banking Company; the American Sheet and Boiler Plate Company, and the Chicago and Atchison Bridge Company. Jeptha Homer Wade II also worked in the telegraph industry; he later joined the banking community in Cleveland. He was an active philanthropist, serving as a trustee of the Western Reserve Historical Society, Western Reserve University, Adelbert College, and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. He was an incorporator of the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1913, and later established a purchasing fund for the Museum. The collection consists of 699 black and white photographic prints, 131 color photographic prints, 10 copies of photographs, 10 negatives, 3 post cards and 51 copies of postcards, and 9 cased images depicting members of the Wade, Garretson, Howe, Stone, Love, Greene, Everett, McGaw and Sedgwick families as well as family activities, travels, residences, and other places of importance to the members of these related families for a total of 913 images.
